I just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett.  I like it the best of all the books I’ve read so far this summer.  Where to buy amoxicillin, It takes place in Jackson, Mississippi in the early sixties during the civil rights movement.  Although there are mentions of well-known events that happened during that time, the focus is on what life was like for the “help” who lived in Jackson then.  The white families depended on maids (the "help") to keep their households running.  These black women raised the babies, cooked the food, cleaned the houses and did the laundry but were usually not allowed to eat at the same table as the family or use the same bathroom.  The story revolves around how Aibileen and Minny were treated and what they really thought about their lives and the white families they worked for.  Skeeter, a young white girl, returns to Jackson following her college graduation.  She struggles to make sense of her life and the relationships between the Jackson families and their help and finds a way to tell the story.

The author, who grew up in Mississippi with “help”, moved to New York as an adult.  The miles between those two states allowed her to gain the perspective she needed to write her book.  She was conflicted about telling too much or not enough and being presumptuous.  The book is funny, eye-opening, and heart-breaking.  The characters, main and supporting, are really well developed.   I loved it and I hope you will, too.  Check this great read out at Burlington Public Library.

What happened. What I love about science fiction is that each book asks a “what if” question.  What if there really was an ancient civilization on Mars.
