     This is the setting for Franklin's fascinating historical fiction, "Mistress of the Art of Death."  I know, I read science fiction.  But my daughter, who mostly reads fantasy, stumbled on this title and she said, "You have to read this."  So, being the good, obedient, mother, I did.  And I loved it.  Confidentially, I really like historical fiction ever since I read "Witch of Blackbird Pond" when I was in fifth grade.  I'm fascinated by the ordinary lives of people in long ago places and times.  History is just as fantastic and foreign to me sometimes as future cities and distant planets.
